After a child reaching skeletal maturity, the curve will remain stable?

This depends on the size of the curve and individual variation. Natural history of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis reveals that some patients with curve of 40 degrees or more can still progress at approximately 1 degree per year.

A

After brace treatment, the spine will become ‘straight’ again?

The primary purpose of the brace is to control the curve from progressing. In some cases, there can be correction of the curve to some degree, but this does not always happen due to curve size and type and patient factors. The scoliotic curve cannot be reversed to without a curve with bracing.

A

Can acupuncture treat scoliosis?

There is no evidence that scoliosis can be treated by acupuncture. The most important point is to seek specialist consultation and assessment of scoliosis promptly for a growing patient.

A

Can people with scoliosis still do exercise?

Yes, patients with scoliosis should have regular physical exercise and remain active as children without scoliosis.

A

Can scoliosis be affecting my child’s height?

For patients with severe curve or curves progressively getting severe, the height may not be increasing as much during puberty. However, scoliosis is not associated with short statue.

A

Does scoliosis occur because of the bad posture or because of the heavy school bag?

The bad posture or heavy school bag are things we should avoid, but it is not the causes of scoliosis.

A

How to prevent scoliosis?

There is no evidence that there is any way we can prevent scoliosis. A balanced diet, regular exercise and good posture should be maintained for a health spine.

A

The brace treatment is suitable in all cases. Is that right?

The brace treatment is prescribed by the orthopaedic specialist after considering the curve size and skeletal maturity with the amount of growth potential remaining. Mild curve size 40 degrees may not be suitable for bracing.

A

What is the recommendation for a child without scoliosis?

A balanced diet with adequate amount of milk and dairy products (if no food allergy), daily exercise or physical activities including stretching, and good sitting and standing postures are advisable for every child.

A

Will girls with scoliosis have problems with pregnancy?

No studies have demonstrated any increase of complication rates or increased risk of caesarian section in women with idiopathic scoliosis. However, back pain may occur in pregnant women with scoliosis.
