Observation is recommended for mild curves, or for patients who are relatively skeletally mature with curves that do not progress.
Patient will be monitored regularly and follow up consultation with the specialist is usually scheduled every 6 to 9 months, until the bones mature completely. At each follow-up visit, a whole spine x-ray is usually taken to compare with previous one for any increase in curve size.
Regular observation is all it needs for stable curves. However, if the curve progresses quickly in the past few months, or if the curve becomes larger than 25 degrees and yet the patient is still skeletally immature, then brace treatment may be required. The specialist will discuss with the patients and parents whether a brace is needed to control the curve from worsening.
